07-14-2024 - 5:00 AM - Good Morning! It's Monday, and time to give the Briggs & Stratton Q6500 generator its regular exercise run. I recommend getting one if you can. The peace of mind of having it on standby is priceless. I heard one local "peep" on Channel 19 and a short burst of voice on Channel 31. I don't know if that was local or skip. Things will pick up as the morning progresses. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

07-14-2025 - 5:10 AM - Current National Short Range Weather Forecast

07-14-2025 - 5:30 AM - My first computer was a Commodore 64, purchased in 1984. My second computer, purchased in 1991, was an IBM clone with a 40 MB hard drive, 1 MB of memory, and a 16 MHz processor speed. It had 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" disk drives. It was a DOS system. I don't remember the brand name. I remember having a choice between the DOS version and an early Windows version. I'm glad I chose DOS. Working from the DOS command prompt was a good experience.

07-14-2025 - 7:00 AM - Two guys are chatting on Channel 22. They're going back and forth between English and Spanish. It sounds like they're passing through town. The signal was weak, then strong, and now getting weak again. CB Radio is dead! Long live CB Radio!

07-14-2025 - 7:45 AM - The year was 1974. The location was the snack bar at McCully Barracks (Army), Wackernheim, Federal Republic of Germany. The occasion was lunchtime. I had decided to skip the chow hall. At my table and feeling a little mischievous, I loosened the cap on the salt shaker as a favor for the next customer. For the evening meal, I decided again to skip the chow hall and dine at the snack bar once more. I sat at the same table and dumped the salt on my food. Lesson: salt is bad for you!

07-14-2025 - 10:35 AM - Channels 6 and 11 are the main points of activity at the moment. Activity moves up and down the band, but 6 and 11 are usually the first to awaken and the last to go to sleep at night. Of course, there are always exceptions. The sideband channels are quiet right now.

07-14-2025 - 2:00 PM - There are several booming signals on Channel 38 lower sideband with some excellent audio. My definition of excellent audio is "crisp, clear, and not a hint of echo." Your definition might vary.

07-14-2025 - 4:00 PM - After being on fire for several hours, the CB Radio band is taking a little nap. At least as heard in North Texas. I have no doubt it will swing back in the other direction before the day is over. For now, though, it's local trucking chatter on Channel 19. At 5:30 PM, the Local Group should show up on Channel 23.

07-14-2025 - 6:30 PM - The Local Group did show up on time on Channel 23. On Channel 38 lower sideband, I hear 14 in Jamaica racking up the contacts. He's a lot stronger than the U.S. stations he's working. That's not unusual for Jamaican stations. To his further credit, he's saying "seven three" and not "seven threes" or "seventy threes."

07-14-2025 - 6:445 PM - About CBers on YouTube. I want to see unboxing, installing, fixing, adjusting, and tinkering with radios and antennas. I don't want to see "skip clips." If I want to hear CB Radio chatter, I turn on the CB Radio. These skip clips are likely interesting to those without CB Radios. My suggestion to them: buy a CB Radio and make some contacts!

07-14-2025 - 8:45 PM - For about the last hour, Channel 9 has been the only active channel I hear at my North Texas location. Channel 9 is the domain of the Spanish-speaking stations. Is the band closing for the night? I do not know, and I'm not getting up at 1:00 AM to check.

07-13-2025 - 5:30 AM - Good Morning! The CB Radio band is trying to come alive already this morning—at least Channel 10. We might get an early start today. Since I mowed my yard yesterday, I don't have anything important on the schedule for today. I'll see who's who and what's what on the CB Radio. My Folgers Black Silk Coffee is ready!

07-13-2025 - 6:20 AM - CB Radio Channel 6 - the superbowl - and Channel 11 are starting to make their presence known. You might already know this if you have a big tower and a directional antenna. I might be behind the curve with my Zero Five ground plane antenna. But not by much!

07-13-2025 - 7:10 AM - Here's a tip for Morse code bracelet makers: Spacing is everything! Without spacing between characters, your bracelet is gibberish. It doesn't matter what your cheat card says. Yes, some CBers are Morse code operators in that "other" service!

07-13-2025 - 7:30 AM - What the world needs is a massive fleet of CB Radio-equipped Mr. Softee trucks on patrol, seven days a week! I haven't seen a Mr. Softee truck in 60 years, and that was in St. Louis!

07-13-2025 - 8:00 AM - The CB Radio band continues to improve, with more channels becoming active. I don't expect a lot of local trucking traffic on Channel 19, but we might get some oversized loads through town.

07-13-2025 - 8:20 AM - We are headed back down to "solar minimum" for the current Solar Cycle. This evolution is good news for truckers and others who want to enjoy local communications. Not so good news for the skip shooters. Over the next year or so, we should experience a good mix of conditions before we hit rock bottom. Even when we're at the top or bottom of the cycle, conditions change enough to allow good times for locals and skip shooters. If you're holding off buying a CB Radio because of skip, don't. Get that radio and join the fun!

07-13-2025 - 1:00 PM - I've been listening to CB Radio Channel 38 (lower sideband) this afternoon. There are plenty of contacts being made from one side of the USA to the other. When conditions are good, even my stock radio (four watts out and no amplifier) and ground plane antenna can reach out and touch a few people. Get a radio and join the fun.

07-13-2025 - 4:00 PM - A few years ago, the Spectrum Internet people unplugged my cable, saying something to do with my radios and/or antennas was messing with the reception of others on the block. I started my research on FCC Parts 97, 95, and 15 to see what my options might be should I decide to go to war with these people. A Spectrum tech came out the next day, before I could decide on what I was going to do, re-routed my cable, and declared the problem solved. I they're happy, I'm happy. I've since deleted Spectrum for Syntrio. Now, all I have to fear from Spectrum is being accosted by their salespeople at Walmart.

NOTICE: I took a few months off to work on other projects, but now I'm back!
