07-13-2025 - 6:00 PM - The Local Group, which usually appears on Channel 23, is just now making an appearance. I'll send them to the office to get a tardy slip! Before long, they were chatting with a guy in Mississippi. He sounded like he was here in town.
07-13-2025 - 7:50 PM - I hear a "net" on Channel 36, lower sideband. The Net Control Station in South Carolina is booming, but the other operators are not nearly as strong. I can't remember the last time I heard a net on the CB Radio. It's more of an Amateur (ham) Radio thing. I'll have to check to see if this is a weekly or daily net and what purpose it might serve.
07-13-2025 - 9:00 PM - The band is still alive with traffic on 20 of the 40 channels. I'm sure it will still be going when I hit the sack in an hour.
07-13-2025 - 9:20 PM - The band has suddenly gone to sleep. I have no idea if it's down for the night. I know I am!
07-12-2025 - 5:30 AM - Good Morning! It's Saturday, and I expect the CB Radio to be jam-packed with signals from one end of the band to the other this afternoon. Right now, it's "dead as a doornail" as boomers like me used to say. My research shows that the phrase appeared as early as the year 1362. Anyway, I've got the President McKinley on 40-channel scan. I don't want to miss any local communications. There's a serious discussion going on in my mind about whether or not I should mow the yard today. I'll let you know how that turns out. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
07-12-2025 - 8:45 AM - I decided to mow the yard. I'm halfway through it and I'm taking a water break. A break? I'm old and I live on a corner. The CB Radio band is slowly coming alive. I'm thinking about a Chinese buffet later today. I'll update you on whether or not that comes true.
07-12-2025 - 1:15 PM - I skipped the Chinese buffet and got pizza from a local supermarket deli. I mowed the yard just in time, as a thunderstorm was right on top of my town. We're getting lightning, thunder, and rain now. I saw some roofers working earlier. I bet they're on break now! The CB Radio band is alive now with many operators having a great time.
07-12-2025 - 2:30 PM - Current National Short Range Weather Forecast
07-12-2025 - 3:00 PM - CB Radio is your only choice for license-free, long-distance communications. The Family Radio Service (FRS) and Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) are license-free, but not long-range. The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is neither license-free nor long-range. So, CB Radio it is!
07-11-2025 - 5:30 AM - Good Morning! It's Friday. The Local Group meets on Channel 23 in my town on most nights. They've been meeting there for years. They don't have a name for their group, so I call them the Local Group. Do you have such a group in your area? On CB Radio Channel 19, truckers were sounding the alarm on a local motorcycle cop on the freeway. One trucker chimed in with "He better not mess with me cuz I've got a sack of donuts, and I'm not afraid to use "em." My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!
07-11-2025 - 5:55 AM - Now is a good time to talk about my descriptions of band conditions. I describe band conditions as flat today, asleep, quiet, or other terms that indicate less than favorable conditions for reliable communications. I have no interest in the science of "space weather" (electromagnetic radiation and charged particles emitted by the sun) and how it affects radio communications. I have no interest because there's nothing I can do to change space weather. I have a simplified alternative to worrying about space weather. I turn on the radio. Either the band is open, or it is not. If a solar flare is on the way to fry my radios, there will probably be bigger things to worry about. Besides, I'll just get the spare radio and power supply out of my safe/Faraday shield. We're not going to change the world, whether our radios are on or off. Have fun! Your opinion might vary.
07-11-2025 - 8:30 AM - The CB Radio band is wide awake with plenty of signals across the band. I hear one station in my city racking up the "DX" contacts. We're at the peak of the current solar cycle and, for the next few years, CB Radio will be the domain of the skip shooters. If that's you, the time to get a CB Radio is now!

07-11-2025 - 12:15 PM - Did you see the episode of Better Call Saul where Mike pulls a Galaxy CB Radio from under the car seat and makes a call, on Channel 3, with no coaxial cable connected, to the police department to check a car tag? That's right up there with Jeff Goldblum looking through the wrong end of binoculars in The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
07-11-2025 - 12:30 - There are some strong, clear signals on CB Radio Channel 38 this afternoon. When it comes to SSB, I'm much more of a listener than a talker. One reason is that I don't use an amplifier, so my DX contacts are few and far between. And please, stop calling amplifiers "linears". Look up the word linear in the dictionary. You won't find anything close to an amplifier there. Calling an amplifier a linear is like calling a car a blue, or a red. Blue car is cool, and linear amplifier is cool, but linear by itself is almost meaningless.
07-11-2025 - 3:45 PM - While Channel 19 has been a little sleepy this afternoon, Channel 6, the "superbowl" of CB Radio, has been on fire. One operator who lives just a few miles from me has been responsible for a lot of that heat.
07-11-2025 - 5:15 PM - Over the last month, on my radio, there has been an increase in the number of people speaking Spanish on Channel 19. Could these folks be pranking U.S. truck drivers? Just because they choose to speak Spanish doesn't mean they don't understand enough English to travel the continent safely. Of course, it's possible they don't speak English at all. There's no way to know. When I was stationed in Germany, I knew enough German to drive across that country with no problems, but when I spoke to American GIs on the CB, I spoke English. Yes, there were plenty of GIs on CB Radio in Germany. Germans, too!
07-11-2025 - 5:30 PM - The movies Smokey and the Bandit and Convoy were the best things to happen to CB Radio. The movies Smokey and the Bandit and Convoy were the worst things to happen to CB Radio. I like Burt Reynolds, but he was the poster child for everything that went wrong with CBRadio. Your opinion might vary.
07-11-2025 - 7:00 PM - The Local Group has been on Channel 23 since about 5:30 PM. I'm switching them off at 7:00 PM because the Texas Rangers game is coming on. I'll catch them again tomorrow. The Rangers, too!
07-11-2025 - 7:30 PM - Two memes are making the rounds on X, formerly known as Twitter. They show a mobile CB Radio mounted under the dash of a car, with the microphone hanging over the rear-view mirror. One meme says, "The Original Car Phone." The other meme says, "The Original Social Media." Both are incorrect since Amateur (ham) Radio predates CB Radio by 30 years.
07-11-2025 - 7:50 PM - Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to take a handheld CB Radio to the observation deck of the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio and talk to a trucker on I-35, all while avoiding arrest for suspicion of terrorism.
07-11-2025 - 10:00 PM - I'm a boomer. I've heard a zillion people talk on TV, AM-FM radio, movie theaters, and in day-to-day life. In all my life, I have never heard such a concentration of people who sound like Festus from the old TV show "Gunsmoke" as I hear from the trucking crowd on CB Radio Channel 19. Do they teach that in truck driving school? I'm not trying to be funny. Start with a Festus and add some echo, and you've got audio Hell! This is what I hear. Your observations might be different.
NOTICE: I took a few months off to work on other projects, but now I'm back!
